Hand spinning The oldest and most traditional method of turning alpaca fibre into yarn is hand spinning. Alpaca is a very attractive fibre to the hand spinner as unlike sheep's wool it is a dry fibre, containing minuscule amounts of lanolin and so can be spun straight from the fleece without the need to scour.

Using woolen long draw to process hand spun yarn makes a yarn that is soft and squishy! Spinning alpaca fiber is a lot of fun. This is the third video in a series where I demonstrate how to process. Put the fiber in the water and push it down (don't agitate it too much!) and let the fiber soak for 20-30 minutes. Fill the other basin with clean warm water. Let the fiber soak in that for 20-30 minutes. Repeat Steps 3-4 if you feel the fiber is still dirty. Gently squeeze out any excess water and let it dry on a mesh surface. Huacaya alpaca has a staple length of 2-6 inches and a fiber diameter generally finer than sheep's wool; averaging in the mid-20s in micron count. I read that alpaca is slipperier than wool and would need a bit more twist than comparable wool yarn. I didn't particularly notice this to be the case with my spin.
